You said, “Yes” now let us get you ready to say “I Do”! Hands down, shopping for your wedding dress has to be one of the most anticipated events that you have been waiting for. Check out these 13 extremely helpful tips to help you ease the process of shopping for the perfect wedding dress!
1) Know your budget
We all dream of those fancy high fashion wedding dresses that models flaunt up and down the runway. However, let’s be honest…for most of us they simply fuel our wedding inspiration. They help us build the ideal gown in our minds, which is great news! However, we have to keep our valuable budgets in mind. So make sure to set a budget, as well as your wiggle room. This will help to keep your dress expectations in check and well within budget!
2) Consider your wedding location & season
Imagine yourself on a beautiful beach with your groom-to-be, the sun is setting beautifully across the ocean, the breeze is amazing and cool…yet, you’re burning up in a gorgeous winter gown with lace to your fingertips. This is certainly a worst case scenario, but it still serves its purpose. Venue and the season certainly come into play when choosing that once in a lifetime gown!
3) Start your search early
Wedding dress shopping is a process. We suggest that you start your research as early as possible. This way you have an idea of what you want and where to get it. Next, we highly suggest that you begin trying on dresses 6-8 months from your wedding day. That way you have enough time for ordering, fabrication, shipping and alterations. Unless you’re purchasing your dress during a sample sale, you will most likely have to wait 3-4 months to get your final dress. But don’t forget that we also have quite a few dresses available for quick delivery!
4) Make an appointment…during the week
This is really a two part tip. First, make sure you make an appointment (and block out an hour or two). Every bride-to-be deserves her shine time. So make sure your shoppe of choice is prepared for your arrival. Also, make sure your shoppe of choice has the line and dresses you’re looking to try on. Next, consider making your bridal appointments during the week. The shoppes will most likely be less crowded and more attention can go towards you and your needs.
5) Pick you inner circle
We won’t tell you who to choose or why but we will whisper a little thought to consider. The opinions of those close to you work both ways: 1) that you value their opinion 2) that they’re honored to be a part of the process. However, you should never feel forced into a decision you won’t be excited to look at 50 years from now. Also, try to keep your inner circle as small as possible…too many ideas could become overwhelming.
6) Wear the right undergarments
No need to bring out your whole undergarment drawer but definitely grab the basics for the big search! We suggest that you wear a nude colored strapless bra and a matching panty (or thong). The skin-toned undergarments won’t take away from the dress and it still allows you the necessary support.
7) Refrain from wearing heavy makeup
This should be a no brainer. Can you imagine hopping from one dress to another and…oops…your lipstick swipes across the fabric! We suggest that you keep your makeup light and fresh. This way you can imagine your dream day and how amazing you will make that dress look! Flawless.
8) Have an idea of you favorite dress type(s)
Do a little research, or a lot. What type of dresses make you smile or make you feel all tingly inside? Also, take a look in your closet. Get an idea of the kind of lines and curves you accentuate on a regular day. In many cases, this will help you narrow down what type of dresses that you may enjoy. From mermaid gowns to full blown cupcake style ball gowns…your options are indefinite.
9) Purchase a dress that fits now
We often get so caught up in our ideal weight that we forget to be realistic. When it comes to that gorgeous gown you’re about to rock, consider buying the dress in the size that fits you now. Even if you’re planning on going on a super workout regimen, just remember that it is much easier to get a dress taken “in” than taken “out”.
10) Bring your shoes
Make sure to grab a pair of shoes that are the proper comfort level and height for you. This is just to ensure that your dress will be the proper length with heels on!
11) Keep an open mind
You’ve been doing research on the perfect gown since your beau proposed, probably since even before that! We get it; you know exactly what you want because you’ve been daydreaming about it since you first laid your eyes on that magazine page. But things happen…maybe the bridal salon doesn’t carry the exact dress but has beautiful pieces that are inspired by the original gown. If you stay open to other ideas, choosing your perfect dress will be much easier.
12) Brush up on your wedding lingo
From A-line to trumpet, cashmere to taffeta, and marsala to cerulean these are all terms that could be tossed around during casual wedding convos. Simply by following wedding blogs, major bridal influencers and grabbing a magazine here and there will help you to pump up that wedding vernacular. You will be a part of the conversation in no time!
13) Know the return policy
Things happen. Make sure you are 1000% clear on the shoppe’s return policy! Ask for all the fine print and make sure you understand your responsibility, as well as theirs.
